Writers Skills-Enhancement Group
We hope you find this question-and-answer session with Patty Cook, director of the Writers SEG, helpful.
If you want to visit a future Writers SEG meeting to determine whether the group fits you and you fit the group, contact Patty using any of the means specified below and ask to be invited.
---
Q: We would like to hear your story. Why did you take over this SEG?
A: Writing is becoming an increasingly important part of my marketing strategy. I figured there were others like me in Yellow-Tie, and hoped enough of us would want to study together to make this SEG function. I was thrilled to find out that was true, so the group got together and decided its purpose would be to:
- Enhance each individual's writing skills
- Explore new outlets for writing (blogs, articles, books, etc.)
- Support each other as we strive to effectively market our services through writing.
Yellow-Tie's philosophy of "give without keeping score" will allow each participant to bring his or her experience to the table. When this happens, everyone walks away a winner.
---
Q: How would you describe the people you want in your group?
A: We welcome people who believe in the value of writing as a tool for marketing products/services, and as an outlet for enjoyment. The target audiences are not as important as the members' desire to stretch their creativity, to learn proper usage and to share with the group.
---
Q: When, where and how often does your SEG meet?
A: We meet the first Thursday of every month from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at Skeleton Key near Hampton Village. There is no meeting cost. Meetings are by invitation only, however, so please contact me at 314-952-2312 if you want to be invited.
The SEG meeting is followed (from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) by a Shut Up & Write Day, open to the public for a fee. We write quietly -- no conversations, cell phones, etc. -- while sharing the creative energy in the room. Attendees may bring their lunches or may leave for lunch and come back.
---
Q: What does a typical SEG meeting look like?
A: We start with feedback on any work that was traded via email before the meeting. Cindy Wagner, president of Editing Ink, then brings us the Grammar Corner, reminding us of one rule of proper grammar/punctuation, or educating us on a rule of style. Next, we enjoy a creative-writing exercise, which we share with the group, to get our juices flowing. We end with accountability -- proclaiming the writing projects we will have completed before the next meeting. Then we open the doors for the Shut Up & Write part of the day.

Q: Who are your current members?
A: At this time, our SEG includes:
- Patty Cook
- Mary Kausch
- Cindy Wagner
